The cupcake craze has exploded beyond our borders, as far reaching as the Middle East. The New York Times reported that Fadi Jaber, who always preferred his American classmates’ cupcakes, brownies, and cookies to his own mother’s pasteries, knafah and baklawah, has opened his own business “Sugar Daddy’s.”
Jaber sunk his teeth into a Magnolia Bakery’s vanilla cupcake back in 2004, inspiring him to quit his job and enroll at the Institute of Culinary Education in Manhattan. Some cupcake! Magnolia Bakery is located in Greenwich Village, not far from featured space for lease 11 Christopher Street. The bakery was made infamous by Sex and the City, when Sarah Jessica Parker’s character Carrie was shown eating a pink-frosted cupcake.
After school, Jaber interned at Billy’s Bakery in Chelsea, and then started a cupcake frenzy in his Amman, Jordan. The shop also sells cheesecake and brownies, but the cupcakes are familiar to his clientele (95 percent of whom are women) from studying abroad. Sugar Daddy’s has become so popular that Jaber has opened two other bakeries in Beirut and Dubai. Aside from the original American flavors, Jaber tries to appeal to regional tastes, creating a date cupcake with cream cheese frosting, as well as pistachio with orange blossom frosting.
Cupcakes are no longer just a delectable dessert, they are world-renowned fashion statement. Grab a box of red velvet cupcakes to a party, and you will be sure to have the hottest accessory in hand.
