A crowded cafeteria that you will actually like

20 01 2010

Did you see that giant line wrapping around the block in Chelsea over the weekend? That was for Cafeteria, the comfort food haven that’s open 24 hours a day. With a celebrity following, the eatery boasts an extensive menu filled with breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert items, but is best known for being up on the latest food trends. Order the buttermilk fried chicken, the lemon and ricotta pancakes, the old school meatballs or the peanut butter cheesecake and you will not be disappointed. Not only an always-crowded eatery, Cafeteria also has a bar menu boasting lychee bellinis, winter ale sangria, and Blue Point lagers.

Even stars that have been splashed all over the NY Post are making their appearances. Ashley Dupre was recently spotted on a date with JD Harmeyer from the Howard Stern Show. The two were sipping hot chocolate at their Cafeteria date. Ready to try it out? The eatery is located at 119 7th Avenue, nearby space for lease 88 7th Ave.

Sabon-ize your body

19 01 2010

Whether you are looking for a nice Valentine’s Day present or just some high quality soaps to add some style to your bathroom, Sabon is the right place to look. I find that some bath and body stores are filled with overwhelming, unnatural, chemical-like scents, but French bath boutique Sabon’s products reign supreme.

I love the ginger orange, patchouli lavendar vanilla, and lavendar apple combinations found in the lotion, body scrub, and essential oils. Is your apartment feeling drab? Try one of their bestselling items, the aroma sticks in champagne, bordeaux, or heaven. And while most body shops cater to women, Sabon also has men’s grooming products like after shave, cleanser, and shower oil.

You can find a Sabon store in a number of locations, but I suggest the Chelsea spot at 78 7th Avenue. This Sabon is nearby space for lease 88 7th Avenue, a perfect spot for a restaurant, cafe, or bar.

Space Spotlight: 88 7th Avenue

8 01 2010

Sitting in a buzzing Chelsea neighborhood, 88 7th Avenue is now for lease. The space is a gorgeous ready-to-use restaurant space complete with a  liquor license and other necessary amenities. From the 1200 SF ground floor, take a walk down the spiral staircase to find yourself in the 2,000 SF dining room with two large bathrooms and full kitchen.

While the quality of the property is one of the best reasons to lease the space, the neighborhood may be just as important. A high foot traffic area, the block contains other great tenants like Sabon, The Lite Choice, Chelsea Wine Country, the Leonard Golino Salon, and children’s shop Lucky Wang. The area is nothing short of fabulous food spots like the popular Cafeteria, serving up comfort foods 24 hours a day. Also nearby is Cafe Champignon, where patrons can enjoy fine wines and coffee.

Think your restaurant would make the perfect addition to the neighborhood? Call 212-213-6480 or email me at caitlin@besenretail.com for leasing information.

Limelight Marketplace, ex-church and ex-nightclub, now shopping center has filled 45 out of its 60 available spaces, according to the Real Deal. One of the most notable new tenants is “It’s Sugar,” a spin off of Dylan’s Candy Bar, who plans to home the world’s largest gummy bear among other bins of candy. The bear will weigh 5 pounds, and sell for $40 if you want to try to go into a state of sugar comatose. Other future shops include Hunter Boots, Sabon, and baby store Silly Souls. The store is expected to open for the holidays.

Trader Joe’s Expanding to Chelsea

Trader Joe’s gourmet grocery is bringing its long lines and Hawaiian shirts to another location in Manhattan. The store will occupy a whole block at 675 Sixth Avenue, which was once the home of Barnes & Noble. The 41,000 SF space will be filled to the brim with organic goods, but there is still no word on if a Trader Joe’s wine shop will be included. The chain already has a location in Union Square, Rego Park, Queens, and one nearby recently leased space 226 Atlantic Avenue in Downtown Brooklyn. A third Manhattan location is expected to open on the Upper West Side at Broaday and 72nd Street next year. I am hoping lines will dwindle with two extra locations, but I have a feeling I’ll be waiting with my organic roasted red pepper hummus in hand.

From Pray to Play to Pay?

9 09 2009

churchThe 163-year-old landmark building, which was once a Chelsea church, then a nightclub called Limelight, could be a shopping mall by Christmas. “The Limelight Marketplace” will home 80 different high-end shops and one restaurant. The residents of the neighborhood are happy to see the nightclub go, as it was often an epicenter for drugs and crime, but are skeptical about the new mall, considering that the mall is just a jumping off point for putting in another club.

The New York Post reported that Jessica Shrier, the spokeswoman for Limelight Marketplace assures residents that the space will “absolutely not” be a nightclub, and “There will be one fine-dining restaurant with liquor, but there will be no dancing, no cabaret whatsoever.” Shrier says the marketplace will be a great place for the community as it will be creating jobs for locals.

Still, the community is worried that adding shopping stores will add more banners to the outside of the church, which will take away from the church’s character. Shrier bounced back by saying “We understand all of the concern, but what we are trying to do is bring a fresh shopping area to this long-empty location.” Then adding,  ”There’s going to be nothing else like it.”

Limelight Marketplace: Hot new shopping destination to liven up the community? Or commercialized shopping mall ruining an important landmark fixture? Let me know what you think.
