10 Reasons to Open a Store in Downtown Brooklyn (updated!)

17 12 2009

Space for lease 558 Fulton Street

Back in September, I created a list of top ten reasons to open a store in Downtown Brooklyn, and the reasons (plus new ones!) still hold true. While the space 226 Atlantic Avenue was leased, there’s still space available! Sitting in a bustling part of Brooklyn, 558 Fulton Street is the ideal location for a deli or cafe. Take a look at some of the benefits of the neighborhood below!

10. Trader Joe’s. A less stressful version of the Union Square grocery, you can buy organic products on a budget, and it’s located not far from 558 Fulton Street.

9. Brooklyn Ballet. A recent addition to the performing arts community, this is a professional not-for-profit dance company that offers a variety of dance classes, including ballet, jazz, and hip-hop.

8. Great neighbors. Downtown Brooklyn is the third largest business district in NYC. There is no doubt that you will get business with the area’s heavy foot traffic.

7. Columbus Park. The New York Daily News called it “an outdoor oasis… the place to be.” The park is a perfect lunch spot with 22 new movable bistro-style tables and 82 chairs.

6. A new and improved Fulton Street. Currently undergoing renovations, the street will soon include new sidewalks, streetlights, bus shelters, and The Fulton Mall.

5. Unique Thrift. A new consignment shop on Fulton Street providing shoppers with stylish and low priced vintage finds.

4. An amazing personal trainer. Elite Bodies by J. Ellis Jones opened on 226 Atlantic Avenue. He creates customized workouts with 45-minute increment sessions and vitamain plans for each customer.

3. Terrific Thai. The Gang Thai Kitchen opened on Court Street, and has had rave reviews. Try  the “Crying Tiger Salad, ” or grilled marinated beef mixed with lime juice, Thai Herbs, chili flakes, cucumber and shallot, or the Bangkok Pad Thai.

2. Dazzling Holiday Lights! Three breathtaking gateways at the prominent entrances of the Fulton Street shopping district are installed for the holiday season. The gateways are baseed on designs that the lighting contractor had installed in Italy, making this the first United States installment.

1. Family Owned Businesses. The family-run small businesses are what gives Downtown Brooklyn its neighborhood feel. A few of these small businesses include Concord Market, Sid’s Hardware, Bridge Cleaners, and Claro Shoes.

Three Reasons to Love Fulton Street

30 11 2009

Shopping on Fulton Street (picture via Downtown Brooklyn Partnership)

1. New Sidewalks

The Fulton Streetscape Project has replaced the once messy sidewalks with new concrete on both sides of Fulton Street from Flatbush Avenue to Boerum Place. Don’t worry, the construction is minimized during shopping hours to avoid hurting local businesses. With only 18 feet left to go, the finishing touches will be completed by the Spring, including street lights, benches, bus shelters, and other streetscape elements. A 17,000 SF public square will also be added, entitled “Albee Square.”

2. Dazzling Holiday Lights

Three breathtaking gateways at the prominent entrances of the Fulton Street shopping district will be installed for the holiday season. The gateways are baseed on designs that the lighting contractor had installed in Italy, making this the first United States installment. On top of the light display, 22 pointsetta holiday streamers will be draped along Fulton Street. The decor is sure to keep the area sparkling through the next few weeks.

3. New Growth

On top of the already prominent businesses like Cookie’s Department Store, Crunch Gym, and Sleepy’s, new national tenants are moving in. Most recently is Arby’s, set to open at 347 Fulton Street in the historic Gage and Tollner Building. The eatery is scheduled to open before the end of the year, and will begin hiring locally.

Brooklyn Wine Exchange Moving In

23 11 2009

The Downtown Brooklyn location of Trader Joe's

I’m a regular at the Trader Joe’s Wine shop in Union Square. With my 50 cent wine tote bag in hand, I stock up my red and white collections for future parties and special occasions. While the lines are long, you can’t beat the prices. Upon visiting the Downtown Brooklyn Trader Joe’s near recently leased space 226 Atlantic Avenue, I was disappointed that the store did not come with its own wine shop. Owners of Carroll Gardens’ Smith & Vine decided to change that with the opening of “The Brooklyn Wine Exchange” right next door. While they might not be able to match Trader Joe’s prices, the wine experts behind Smith & Vine will should still impress us.
