Children’s hair salon, gift boutique, and birthday party hot spot Doodle Doo’s now has a new home at 11 Christopher Street in the West Village. The four-year-old business outgrew its Hudson Street location, causing owner Dana Rywelski to sign on to a five year lease with Besen Retail for the 1800 SF space. The busy mom of two young boys, or “Momtrepeneur,” as she has heard, believes her business is recession proof, “Fortunately families are staying in the city and having more children. Even in recessions, people need haircuts. People are still having babies,” she said.
Dana is a former pre-school teacher with a Masters from New York University in Early Childhood Education, and knows the struggle NYC parents go through to find time to get their children’s haircuts as well as do some shopping. She created Doodle Doo’s with this in mind, making it a one-stop-shop. With free lollipops and bubbles with every cut, as well as chairs in the form of a boat and a car, the business keeps the experience as pain-free as possible for both children and parents. Her ideology: If the kids are happy and occupied, parents can shop and relax a bit!
Dana liked the Christopher Street area, noting that it is even more convenient than her last space. Near many forms of public transportation, as well as PS 41 and a pre-school, the area is central, and she can keep her clientele, as some take the train all the way from New Jersey. Not only do her clients come from all over the metro area, but she also has a large celebrity following, including Sarah Jessica Parker, Kate Winslet, Will Ferrell, Liv Tyler, and Linda Evangelista.
Although her shop has high profile clients, Dana offers a wide range of prices for her toys and services. With a larger store space, Doodle Doo’s has plans of expanding its selection to include more furniture, eco-friendly items, and expand on its already popular birthday parties. The children’s haven caters to kids of all ages, but even offers haircuts for busy moms and dads!
